A Q&A with Chana Solemani, the artist behind Atzei Rimon Judaica Art.

Why did you start Atzei Rimon Judaica Art?
It all started when I moved to a new apartment and wanted to decorate the walls. I really wanted a picture of Jerusalem or the Kotel. And then I started thinking about: how does the Kotel as we know it today, fit into the larger Beit Hamikdash of our future?
I wanted to be able to see it on my wall and look forward to it every day, and really understand what I am looking at when I visit the Kotel. I couldn’t find any picture like this in any stores or online, so I decided to try making it on my computer! I looked it up in various sources to try and make the picture as accurate as possible. That's how I ended up with the Beit Hamikdash piece on my wall.

Once I had put it up on my wall, friends and family really liked it, and I ended up printing and framing a few more for other people as gifts. And then someone said, "You should sell them!" At first I thought it was a crazy idea, but then I decided to start this store. Since then, B”H the store has grown from just artwork to also creating bags and accessories.

What inspires you the most?
The main things I feel inspired to make are things that represent Jewish life or thought in a visual, beautiful way that I have not seen in any other stores. Anything to do with Jerusalem or Israel I also find very inspiring and beautiful.
I also want to make some pieces which visualise key elements from the stories of Tanakh, that can elevate and inspire the home. Another thing I am experimenting with at the moment, is really exploring Hebrew lettering and the connections between words to create visualations of how beautiful our language is.

Another thing I am inspired by is representing Jewish art or images that we might not necessarily see or know so much about, for example Persian Jewish Women featuring real Jewish items from Iran. There are just so many things that inspire me, and that I want to do!

How do you create your pictures?
I really use a variety of things to create the pictures. I make them digitally on my computer. I actually made most of the earlier pictures in PowerPoint, because that is what I am used to using in my office job! But since then, I’ve also started working in Canva, although I will always love PowerPoint the most.
I also use just a pen and paper to sketch out my ideas, and I often incorporate real-life photos into the picture.

I have an idea for a new artwork. Can you create it for me?
Absolutely! We love to hear new ideas for new artwork or accessories. You can contact us about any idea big or small, whether you want to commission something or just discuss a new idea you are thinking about.
As well as artwork, we also love to hear from customers with new ideas for accessories! For example, after the release of our “Shabbat Bag”, we had a request to create a Yom Tov bag, which we did, and we named the bag after the clever person whose idea it was.

What is your favourite item on Atzei Rimon Judaica Art?
I have a few favourites, it’s hard to choose just one! The Beit Hamikdash is the most popular item and I would say the “signature piece”. And it was the first one I created so that makes it even more especially close to my heart.
The Persian Jewish Women one I also like very much because most of the items you see in that scene, are real items from Persian Jewish antiquity, like the mezuzah on the wall.
My other favourite item is a mug released for Pesach, which has a matza print on the background, and says in Aramaic, “All who are tired, some and drink coffee!” Possibly the most niche Judaica item to ever exist, which made me laugh and is why I love it.

Where are you based? Can I come and look at the artwork in-store?
We are based in Jerusalem, B”H, which is of course the centre of Jewish art and Jewish beautiful things.
Currently we do not have an in-person store, though we would definitely like to in the future. Right now you can shop all of our artwork and accessories in the online store, and delivery is available all over the world!
We print from a variety of locations, choosing the closest one to the customer to try and keep the packing and delivery costs down.
